Sponsor a spouse

If you’re eligible, you can sponsor your spouse, partner or dependent children to become permanent residents of Canada.

If you do, you must be able to:

  • support them financially

  • make sure they don’t need social assistance from the government

Partner-Spouse

To apply as a partner, you and your partner both need to be 18 or over.

Your partner must also either:

  • be a British citizen

  • have settled in the UK - for example, they have indefinite leave to remain, settled status or proof of permanent residence

  • have refugee status or humanitarian protection in the UK

You and your partner must intend to live together permanently in the UK after you apply.

Immigrant Visa for a Spouse or Fiancé(e) of a U.S. Citizen

Under US law, foreign spouses of US citizens and of US lawful permanent residents do not automatically gain immigration rights in the USA. To secure the right to enter or remain in the United States, they must make an appropriate application to the US immigration authorities.

This means evidence that they meet the US spouse visa requirements and following the relevant – complex and protracted – petitioning process. A number of routes are available to non-US spouses. Options will be determined by your circumstances.

Partnership

Immigration New Zealand defines partnership as two people of the opposite or same sex, who live together in a genuine and stable relationship in any of the following:

  • a legal marriage

  • a civil union

  • a de facto relationship.

EU Spouse Schengen Visa

The non-EU spouse of a UK national requires a visa to travel to the Schengen Area. However, if the following conditions are met then they have not required a visa:

  • The spouse holds a UK Residence Permit that states that the holder is a family member of an EU/EEA National.

  • Traveling with or joining the EEA/EU spouse.
